Sewage problem dries up

SEWAGE sludge in Jiading District has been greatly reduced by using a low-temperature vacuum dehydration and drying technique.
Formerly centrifugally dehydrated, the sludge still contained lots of water afterward, leading to fermentation and the stink that affected local resident’s lives.
The vacuum dehydration and drying process, fueled by natural gas, cuts energy use by 40 percent, according to an employee at Jiading Xincheng Sewage Treatment Plant. The water content in sludge drops from 96-98 percent to below 30 percent. Using the process, 100 tons of sludge can be turned into 28.6 tons of dry and small clods that look like cookies.
Disposing of the clods will not pollute the environment since no inorganic additives are used and waste gas is properly deodorized.
The 80-million-yuan (US$11.5 million) project started trial operation in June and its completion inspection and acceptance is due this month.
