Sewage system an 'unsung' hero

EVERY day 570,000 tons of water is consumed in Jiading District while 400,000 tons of sewage is discharged. The district's sewage system is an "unsung hero" that keeps the area clean.

More than 82 percent of sewage in urban Jiading is treated, 2 percentage points higher than average in Shanghai.

Every day about 380,000 tons of sewage is treated at Shanghai Volkswagon Sewage Treating Plant, Anting International Auto City Sewage Treating Plant and North Jiading Sewage Treating Plant. After treatment, the water reaches the national level B standard and can be used directly to water trees and plants. The sewage pipe network exceeds 900 kilometers and covers all towns, sub-districts, industrial zones, tourist attractions and main residential communities in rural areas.

Shanghai Rongcheng Metal Product Co Ltd in Nanxiang Town received a sewage discharge certificate recently. Thus all its discharged sewage will be piped to a nearby sewage treating plant. More than 2,700 factories in Jiading have received the certificate.

In the past three years, 1,790 factories have been added to the network, especially after the expansion of the second phase at the sewage treating plant in Anting International Auto City. More than 100 factories in Waigang Industrial Park have been included in the sewage network.

In the past, many old residential areas in Jiading lacked a sewage network, so the sewage was discharged into rivers without treatment. This caused a great deal of pollution in local waterways.

To solve this problem, the district made a plan in 2009 to develop a sewage discharge system. Take Anting for example, 35.4 million yuan (US$5.6 million) has been invested within three years to lay 16 kilometers of water pipes in Anting Town. All households in the town are connected and industrial sewage is now collected to prevent further pollution to local waterways.
