Shanghai-Nanjing high-speed rail faring well

THE Shanghai-Nanjing intercity high speed railway has been operating for four months. We sent our reporters out to see how the new rail service is faring and what passengers need to know.

Volumes at Jiading stations

Daily passenger traffic getting off and boarding at Anting North Station is a pretty stable 150 people a day.

The new rail link is a boon for commuters between both cities ? commuters such as a man called Yang, who works in Anting and lives in Wuxi.

"The ticket from Anting to Wuxi is 47 yuan (US$8.90), and I have spent over 2,000 yuan so far taking the train," Mr Yang says with a smile. "It's much more convenient."

By comparison, passenger traffic at Nanxiang North Station is much less, at about 80 people daily.

However, Shi Shengde, the station master believes that level will certainly increase, especially around special events like Tomb Sweeping Day.

"The stop in Suzhou will attract passengers as time goes on," he says. "Some people said they are hoping we increase the frequency of trains."

Frequency adjustment

Anting North Station and Nanxiang North Station have already tweaked their schedules to reflect transit numbers and passenger convenience.

The number of daily runs from Nanxiang North Station went from five to seven to three.
