Small ideas can mean big energy savings
A small idea can mean big money. A number of Jiading-based companies have implemented innovative measures to save energy in the past years and their efforts are paying off.
Shanghai Kostal-Huayang Automotive Electric Co Ltd has recently installed dormer windows for its four workshops, and the lights in the workshops now can be turned off during the daytime. Carbon tubes were installed below the dormers to help absorb heat and to serve as a fire alarm. Once the temperature exceeds 65 degrees Celsius around the tubes, the dormers will open automatically.
"The workshops have also been furnished with 160 sets of 120-watt lights, but only turned on at night now. If they are used during the daytime, they will consume extra over 70,000 kilowatt-hours of power every year, or about 50,000 yuan (US$7,862) from our electricity bill," a company official in charge of the project said.
The company's electricity bill totaled 11 million yuan last year, but this year's budget only increased by 7 million yuan despite the factory's space doubling. That's all thanks to a series of energy-saving projects including frequency converted high-powered motors, a chilled water project and an upgrade on injection molding machines.
The energy bill for every 10,000 yuan of industrial output in the auto industry averaged 110 yuan, according to industry estimates. At Shanghai Kostal-Huayang it's about 79 yuan.
Shanghai Zhuokai Electronic Technology Co made some upgrades on its central air-conditioning system by installing four external cooling towers. The towers can produce cold water - below 12 degrees Celsius - in winter and spring to be used by the air-conditioning system and production line. The cooling towers are each capable of saving 1,000 kwh a day and reduce the monthly electricity bill by about 93,000 yuan, according to Zhao Yong, a department manager of Zhuokai.
