Small things that make all the difference

Jiading spent more than 70 million yuan (US$11.55 million) last year on road maintenance, handrail painting and greenery replanting, in an effort to become a national model district.

An official with landscape authorities said the construction of a model district is composed of thousands of minor things, such as road repairs and lawn maintenance.

Last month, a citizen named Hong Jian found a dozen tiles on the sidewalk on Qinghe Road were broken, making it a safety risk for pedestrians. Hong informed the urban construction authorities which soon made repairs.

Jiading New Town also needs good maintenance just like the old city does. In the new town there are about 100 bridges, and the handrails of all the bridges have recently been repainted. “Repainting can make the bridge look new,” said a worker surnamed Qiang, an employee responsible for the maintenance of a bridge on Akesu Road.
