Small-build Zhang has a big heart
ZHANG Biao, a man of 1.2 meters tall, has pedaled over 30,000 kilometers in the past 13 years to deliver newspapers to villagers in Lianxi Village of Anting Town.
Zhang's father is about 1.8 meters tall and his mother 1.6 meters tall. The parents could never imagine that they would have such a small son.
After graduation from junior high school, Zhang helped parents to do domestic chore as well as taking care of the family's grocery store.
In 1998, a large residential area called Lianmin Garden was completed in the village and most of the villagers moved in.
One day Zhang saw a large number of newspapers and letters at the doorman's room, so he volunteered to deliver them to villagers.
Lianmin Garden covers an area of 330,000 square meters and, at first Zhang Biao tried to use his motor tricycle.
But roads in the area then were too narrow for the tricycle. Zhang had to buy a child's bike and attached a metal box to hold newspapers and letters.
Increasing delivery
At first there were just over 20 households in the area and it took him around half an hour for one delivery.
Later, more villagers moved in and the number of newspaper subscribers rose to 150, with the number of newspaper increasing to over 500.
To deliver the newspapers and letters accurately, Zhang divided the area into two parts, the south section is his first route, then the north, and at around 5pm he would deliver the evening papers.
On September 29 last year, Zhang was badly injured in a car accident.
But in hospital he didn't forget about his delivery work. His mother replaced him until Zhang was well enough a month later.
Zhang said: "I'm not pessimistic about my future for short figure. On the contrary, I will live a wonderful life and make contributions to the society as others do."
