Space the final frontier for residents’ activities

NEW residential areas normally have space for residents’ activities such as exercise, medical consultations or dancing, while older areas lack the space. However, Loutang Residential Area in Jiading Industrial Zone has managed to serve residents in a very limited space.

All they have is a narrow corridor and several small rooms on one floor of a residential building.

How to make the best use of the rooms has become a problem as all activity groups want to use them. The community designated Xu Zhengfeng as coordinator to prevent arguments.

“Sometimes the space is fully occupied, I have to ask some of the activities to be arranged outdoors, for example, the social activities during summer vacation for children are usually arranged outdoors, which they like,” Xu said.

In the Shengxin Community, volunteers provide legal consultation and psychological consultation alternatively in one room. The multi-functional hall is big enough for 60 people, but there can be more than 100 people wanting to attend the meetings.

“We divided the meeting into two parts. The meeting at daytime is for the retired and others at night. Same thing was done for the monthly movies,” a community worker said.

There is a 1,600-square-meter canteen in Shengli Village, which is one of the biggest in the area, and the space is overbooked during weekends as it’s a tradition for villagers to hold wedding banquets there. It has been booked for wedding banquets to the end of next year.

However, the village conventions for hundreds of people are also held during the weekend. To avoid a clash, speeches at the meeting are required to be shorter, so as to let meetings end by 10am, making way for the weddings and other activities.

With regard another important matter for village residents — funerals — they are usually arranged from Monday to Thursday.
