Specialized training helps farmers

TO equip local farmers with agriculture skills, a variety of specialized training was provided in Jiading District last year.

A total of 251 farmers received training in growing grapes, 303 were taught how to cultivate melons, 102 were trained as gardeners and 1,054 received greenery training.

Gu Zhiyi, a farmer from Malu Village in Malu Town, said he learned a lot from the experts in the training sessions last year.

"It greatly increased my income," Gu said. "Even if I got an offer from an enterprise, I would not be willing to work there."

Gu employs five farmers to grow grapes. His experience demonstrated that training and entrepreneurship can promote employment.

Last year, the district created a total of 46,459 jobs and transferred 11,255 surplus rural laborers. The figures represented 174.7 percent and 140.7 percent respectively of the goals set for last year.

A total of 15,635 residents participated in a variety of professional training, reaching 130.3 percent of the original plan.

The local labor authority said a total of 1,819 people received senior skills training last year, an increase of 69.68 percent compared with 2007.

Zhang Tianyou from Shanghai General Motors Corp Ltd participated in senior fitter courses last May.

"I grasped this chance to improve myself. Besides, the local government subsidized 50 percent of the fee," Zhang said. "The six-month course made me progress and my salary has increased by about 600 yuan (US$87.49) per month."
