Sports complex set to open
A sports complex is set to open at the Shineland Park in Nanxiang in May.
The complex will encompass sports, cultural and commercial activities. It is a joint development by Nanxiang Town government and two private companies.
Shineland is in charge of infrastructure construction with private companies responsible for everything else.
“Private companies will be responsible for the daily operation after it is built,” said Guo Yaohua, head of Shineland.
“It is the first time Shanghai has introduced this kind of arrangement. The new building is different from any previous sports facilities,” he added.
The government invested heavily in the construction of stadiums before. But their daily operation and maintenance needed a lot of money and manpower. It became a burden for the government and led to poor management, according to Guo.
A total of 100,000 people live in 82 communities within 3 kilometers from the sports complex. Industrial parks and office buildings in the area have 10,000 workers. Many of them are sports lovers and are keen to take advantage of the complex’s facilities, some of which will be free.
All sorts of sports and training courses will be held at the venue, according to Bian Yusheng, who is in charge of overall operation.
In addition, the complex is aimed at becoming an incubator for startup sports businesses.
The complex under construction is comprised of a number of buildings. The facilities will cover almost all popular sports — badminton, basketball, squash, taekwondo, karate, fencing, yoga and dancing. It will also provide places for indoor soccer, rooftop tennis and ice hockey.
An archery range in line with international standards and a baseball club are also to feature. The range enables the complex to host archery competitions in Nanxiang. The baseball club is the first one in Jiading.
Facilities for rent and some training courses will ensure the operator can raise the money for daily maintenance and better services. The complex will also feature entertainment and restaurants for additional income.
It will cooperate with Nanxiang Cultural Center to build a children’s theater for art education and practice for children, such as stage plays, dancing and musical performances.
