Stem cells bring new hope for leukemia patients
A 26-YEAR-OLD patient surnamed Yang successfully received a cord blood hematopoietic stem cell transplant with the help of China Stem Cell Group Co Ltd in Jiading and Shanghai No. 1 People’s Hospital on May 3.
It was the 2,500th such operation.
After Yang was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia six months ago, the stem cell group helped her find a portion of matched cord blood hematopoietic stem cell. Yang received the transplant surgery at the hospital on May 3.
This kind of surgery is the most known effective way to treat leukemia. The group was founded in 2004 and has the country’s biggest, most advanced and highest quality stem cell bank.
The group completed 668 of this type of transplant in 2016 alone, the most of all China’s medical institutions.
The group helps Chinese people all over the world to obtain stem cells that are a match.
The survival rate of patients is now 58.9 percent after five years of transplant surgery.
The youngest patient was only six months old, a record for patients receiving this type of surgery.
The China Stem Cell Hospital is due to begin a trial operation by the end of this year. It has the aim of being able to carry out more than 1,000 transplants every year.
