Stepping back in time as girls in Han costumes delight foreign tourists
WALKING down Nanxiang Old Street, a British tourist named Andy is curious to see Chinese girls dressed in traditional Han costumes. This is the first time he had visited Jiading. “It’s like taking a step back in time,” says Andy.
Thanks to some 100 students and teachers from Liuyun Middle School, a Han costumed-themed cultural festival has become a highlight of the annual Dragon Boat Festival in Nanxiang from June 9 to 11.
Although their performance at the festival lasted only half a day, the students and their teachers had been preparing for their show for more than a month.
The school has stressed the importance of cultural inheritance since it was established three years ago. The festival is regarded as a trial for the school’s extra-curricular activities.
The festival also features many traditional interactive games for visitors to appreciate ancient Chinese costumes and makeup in different dynasties.
As an initiator of the event, Lan Ling was surprised that the festival gained such an instant popularity. In just one day, more than 200 residents had volunteered to help organize the cultural festival.
Pan Qiong from Qingpu District was one of the volunteers. Her whole family was dressed in Han costumes as she wanted to show her son the beauty of traditional Chinese culture.
“There are many interactive activities, which allow my son to experience and learn about the charisma of traditional Chinese etiquette, manners and ceremonies,” said Pan.
