Strokes of master display the beauty of Chinese characters

CALLIGRAPHY is a traditional and popular Chinese art.

In modern times we have already been used to writing with pens or typing on computers, but we'll never forget the beauty of calligraphy with a brush as it displays the charm of Chinese characters.

Some say the art is symbolic of oriental culture while others think it's the core of Chinese culture.

Zhang Bo, a calligrapher from Jiading District, thinks calligraphy is a high-end art form that is simple yet complicated, common yet mysterious, a little technique yet connecting to the depth of your heart. Because it's done by hand, it reflects different moods and emotions.

Born in May 1962, Zhang learned Chinese painting before 20 and after that he moved on to focus on calligraphy. He has been a calligraphy teacher for more than 20 years and now works in Jiading's cultural department.

"Zhang's work is elegant but not showy, delicate and also tasty," said a critic. "He just pursues beauty and elegance."

Zhang has recently published a collection of calligraphic works, where his smooth strokes, free style and wonderful techniques are on full display.
