Struggles of the young played out on stage
To mark the 100th anniversary of the May Fourth Movement, the Jiading Communist Youth League performed “Zhongliu Jishui,” an original drama, at the Shanghai Mass Art Center on June 20.
“Zhogliu Jishui” (《中流击水》) literarily means “beating the water in the center of a river.”
The drama depicts the fate, choices and struggles of young people from four different eras — before and after the May Fourth Movement, the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the beginning of New China and the beginning of reform and opening-up.
It’s the first historical drama on the development of modern youth since the May Fourth Movement in 1919 in Jiading District.
“The drama inspires our young generation to carry forward the spirit of the May Fourth Movement with practical actions and strive to be the dream catcher of the new era,” one audience member said after watching the play.
More than 500 people, including representatives from Youth Leagues, were in the audience.
