Students get closer to nature on campus

AN “edible” campus was been created at the Experimental Primary School affiliated to Tongji University in time for the new semester.
Designers from the university’s College of Architecture and Urban Planning set up a garden in the campus where vegetables, fruit and crops are planted by the students.
“Our design aims to direct the children to get close to nature, know more about nature and love nature,” said Wei Min, a PhD in architecture at the university. “They can learn plant knowledge, explore ecological balance and feel the beauty of nature.”
Next spring, there will be a “food forest,” where the students will plant cash crops like avocados. Crops like rice and corn will be planted in standard fields in the area along the Wusong River.
On the other side of the school along Moyu Road S., some decorative plants will be grown to beautify the campus. An ecological pond will purify water from the Wusong River and irrigate the paddy field.
“We will also grow some flowers and plants mentioned in the Nature textbook in the garden so that students can observe the plants in their textbook,” Wei said.
Students will do most of the work themselves, including making planting boxes, deciding what kinds of vegetables and flowers they want to grow, managing the soil, watering, fertilizing, and recording plant growth and the harvest.
Designers have also introduced the concept of sustainability into the school. Kitchen waste will be turned into soil and waste water from sink outside the canteen will be collected and used for irrigation. In this way, the idea of environmental protection will be passed on to the students.
