Surfing online to purchase tasty Malu grapes

JIADING District's specialty produce Malu grapes are now available online and have become one of the most popular fresh fruits at 360buy.com, one of China's leading online shopping platforms.

The morning of August 2 witnessed the delivery of the 900th box of Malu grapes by refrigerator car to Xuhui District in downtown Shanghai.

Nowadays, Malu grape orders reach 60 boxes daily, and the total sales have surpassed 2,500 kilograms.

"Through the Internet, grapes are going from garden to consumer much faster," says Fan Jiangfeng, head of the supplier, Huijuan Grape Cooperative.

Since the grapes taste best within 48 hours after being picked, "the speed of transportation is most important," Fan says.

In May, with the help of the local government, the agreement between the cooperative and 360buy.com was signed.

At 2pm each day, orders from 360buy.com will be sent to Fan, who then arranges fruit picking and packaging.

At 5pm, the grapes will be delivered to the logistics center of 360buy.com, and the consumers will receive the fresh grapes the following day.

Currently, a box of Malu grapes costs from 99 yuan (US$15.57) to 199 yuan including transportation.

Netizens who have purchased the grapes online say it is a different experience from buying them in supermarkets, and the grapes ordered online are much more fresh and tasty.

"Online sales of Malu grapes started several years ago. But there used to be no guarantees on quality and delivery time," Fan says.

"The cooperation with 360buy.com eliminates these problems and guarantees the right of the consumers."
