Survival story sparks interest in backpacking

I REMEMBER reading a book about a man’s survival on a desert island in primary school, and was deeply touched by the story. More than 10 years later, I set off on my first backpacking trip.

It was a journey without much of a plan, and the destination was Thailand. Before that I had never traveled abroad, and I didn’t know any foreign languages. I traveled alone without any tour guides.

I was excited to reached Bangkok, and I stayed in a small hotel which only cost 30 yuan (US$6.5) a night, using a dictionary to read a “Lonely Planet” tour guide in English which I bought from street vendor. I made a plan at that night.

I traveled to a small town named Hua Hin by train. I walked through the town and took a vehicle to Phuket Island, and then I got to Patong Beach on a moped. I met a lot of people on my journey and thought a lot about my life and the future.

After the trip to Thailand, I went backpacking to Vietnam and Cambodia and trekked alone in the American West for 35 days.

Several years later, I now run a travel agency with a friend of mine.

We organized an outdoor hiking for the managers and seniors of Jiading.com. Since most of them were new to backpacking, we chose an easy route — Huihang Ancient Path, from Jixi County in Anhui Province to Lin’an County of Zhejiang Province. Although it was just an entry level hike of only 20 kilometers, it was still not easy for them to walk for seven hours in two days. Some of them got cramps, but no one gave up. We helped each other to carry the bags and encouraged them to move on. That’s the spirit and charm of hiking.

After arriving at the final destination we held a campfire gala. It was a forever memory for me to see these new friends celebrating their friendship after a number of kind acts during these two days.

Based on these teammates, Jiading Outdoors started to develop its circle of outdoor hikers across the Jiading District.

People now learn that it’s not a dangerous activity but extremely happy to join in the backpacking.
