Sweet smell of sewage success
JIADING has become a trend-setter in modern sewage disposal after equipping its 40 villages with new water treatment systems. After processing in a system of artificial wetlands and biological tanks, about 2,900 tons of purified wastewater is safely discharged into rivers.
Dayu Village of Malu Town has 17 artificial wetland systems serving 950 households. Waste water is treated by filtration, sedimentation, ion exchange and decomposition in the wetlands, then fed through plant life before being discharged. The technology is simple and inexpensive. As a side benefit, the wetlands have become a scenic attraction.
Xu Xue'e, 69, has lived by the river for four decades and witnessed the changes in the environment.
"In the past," she said, "mosquitoes were all about. But now it's much better, and the water doesn't smell terrible anymore."
Wu Jianping, a village official, pointed to a stretch of cannas covering 600 square meters and said, "The water is purified through multiple processes, so you can smell nothing here but the fragrance of the flowers."
In Qianqiao Village of Xuhang Town, liquid waste from houses is sent to a biological germ tank, where it decomposes and loses its nitrogen and phosphorus. Manure tanks have disappeared from homes and old sewerage ditches have been converted to green areas.
There are three biological germ tanks buried at a depth of three meters. No one standing above would know they are there.
Earthworms help break down organic pollutants in Quanjing Village of Waigang Town. Wastewater passes through an anaerobic fermentation process and sedimentation before it runs into the bio-chemical tank.
The sewage is filtered through solid filler layers and soil layers with earthworms. Its nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon content are greatly reduced.
