TCM herb plantation garden a big draw
A TRADITIONAL Chinese Medicine herb plantation garden in Jiading’s Yuehua Community has been drawing hordes of local residents.
More than 20 varieties of herbs have been planted in the 100-square-meter garden, which serves as a “catalyst” for locals to learn about TCM, according to a local senior surnamed Shi.
The herbs grown in the garden are common TCM plants that can be used in daily life, said Hang Xia, Party secretary of Yuehua Community.
Supported by the Jiading patriotic health campaign committee, the plantation garden was set up by the Jiading Industrial Zone. It is managed by TCM trainees and local resident.
Qian Jianming, a 72-year-old community volunteer, said he takes care of the herbs and often refers to the classic TCM book “Bencao Gangmu” (Compendium of Materia Medica) to learn about the herbs’ natural propensities.
During harvest time for rosemary in summer, Yuehua Community residents gather to grind the rosemary into powder and make fragrance bottles and perfume satchels, while bonding with other locals.
The community’s committee gives free herbs and seeds to residents who need them, and showcase some of the herbs in the teaching area of the plantation garden, Hang revealed.
The TCM volunteer team at the garden has now been expanded to 15 members. Later this year the Jiading Industrial Zone will use the project to expand traditional health care notions to young people and chronic disease patients, while attracting more residents to the herbs.
