Take a step back in time with Li’s show
The best collections from Jiading’s Dalai Clock & Watch Museum will be exhibited for three months from late April at Shanghai Natural History Museum.
The museum on the northern side of Anting Citizen Square showcases clocks and watches from around the world collected by museum founder Li Dalai.
Li, 85, donated his collection to the local government and established the museum for free to the public.
The bid to host the exhibition at Shanghai Natural History Museum was won by the Shanghai Pico Exhibition Co Ltd. According to the company’s art director Wang Yiwen, the exhibition will showcase almost 70 rare pieces from Li’s collection, including a 260-year-old grandfather clock and a duplicate of the Song Dynasty (960-1279) astronomical clock.
A copper water clock from the Sheshan Observatory will also be on display.
“The Story of Time” exhibition will include how time was measured in ancient days by observing natural cyclical changes, the history of timing devices, and the invention of mechanical clocks and watches.
The exhibition will also invite watchmakers to give interactive courses.
The Dalai museum, which covers just 300 square meters, has nearly 700 clocks of various categories including mechanical, electric, pendulum and quartz.
It has attracted attention in the horological world. Collector Fan Jirong donated an antique piano music box and a Jaeger-LeCoultre clock to the museum.
