Take care when coming across stray cats
STRAY cats live at the edge of human society and the natural world. Some people live harmoniously with them, while others avoid them.
Stray cats are commonly seen in residential areas and streets.
At a residential complex on Tacheng Road, around five stray cats appear at about 7am every day, waiting for residents to feed them. In nearby Gingko Park, a worker from the canteen brings leftovers for stray cats every night.
Mao Junnuo who lives at Liyuan No. 2 Community said: “In our community there are some stray cats in every area, and there are more and more of them these years. In spring the cats make a lot of noise, which is quite annoying for residents nearby. In winter and summer, stray cats often hide under vehicles, so drivers need to knock on their vehicles to drive them away.”
Stray cats are also blamed for bringing diseases such as skin allergies and rabies. “Recently the average number of outpatients is around 60 a day, and during peak days it reaches around 90,” said Deng Dayi, of Jiading Chinese Traditional Medicine Hospital’s dog injury clinic.
“Stray cats have a sense of tenure and people should avoid invasion into their tenure whatsoever.” She said stray cats might carry the rabies virus, which can be deadly.
“Whenever a resident is scratched by a dog or cat, he should seek doctor’s help to clean the injury and take rabies vaccine,” she said.
In addition, stray cats might take louses and fleas with them, which may lead to skin diseases if there is contact with humans.
