Teacher dedicates to the wellbeing of students
Since she started working at the Huaishao School in 2005, Liang Jin has kept her mobile phone on around the clock for her students.
“What does a good teacher mean? First he must love the kids, believe in them, take care of them and understand them,” said Vasyl Sukhomlynsky (1918-1970), a former Soviet Union era educator. In Liang’s own words, “Without love, education will not exist. The teachers should offer sincere love to her students.”
One day at midnight, Liang was woken by student Xu Yanlin’s call, seeking for help. At the other end of the phone, Xu’s voice was trembling. Xu said, several seconds before the finishing bell rang at a test, she changed an answer and was afraid that she would be taken as cheating in exam, which would be announced in front of the whole school. She felt troubled and could not get to sleep.
After learning the details, Liang told Xu not to be worried, and Xu’s action would not be taken as cheating. Liang counseled Xu until it was after 1am, when Xu’s emotions stabilized and Liang felt relieved.
Students said in humor that Liang’s cell number is “10086”, which is the number of the China Mobile customer service, because she is always ready to offer service and will never switch the phone off.
Born in the 1980s, Liang has her own innovative teaching methods as a Chinese language teacher.
“Sorry, I cannot give you the answer this time but you can sent out an ‘SOS’ message for help.”
Liang is not shirking responsibility but using her own method of “Classroom SOS.” During the class, students will raise some questions. Instead of answering them right away, Liang would smile and ask other students who know the answer to help them. After students give answers, Liang will offer guidance and additional information.
“This kind of teaching method will ignite divergent thinking among students and answers will be diversified,” Liang said.
Some students are good at paper work, but when standing in front of the class they will feel timid and even stammering. Liang decides to train students’ speaking ability. So she launched a two-minute speech before class. Students can pick their own topic and receive evaluation from a panel of students.
In this way, her students’ speaking ability is improved. Now her students include anchorpersons of the Nanxiang Town’s cultural activities and Yang Jiani, winner of a bronze prize in Shanghai’s golden speaking talent contest in 2010.
Presently the two-minute speech before class is popularized at all the junior middle school classes in Huaishao School, with topics including social news and book reviews.
In the first half of 2009, Liang was pregnant. She still drove her car from her home in Minhang District to Jiading to give lessons to students. She was rewarded for her efforts during that year’s senior middle school entrance examination, as her students’ scores ranked highly.
Recently, at the national Chinese teacher development forum and the prize presentation ceremony, Liang received the title of “Top 100 Chinese Language Teachers in China” out of more than 9,000 contestants.
However, she still remained modest and said the honor should go to her school and the students’ parents. “Without their support I can do nothing at all,” She said.
