The Lantern Festival that lit the entire district with joy
THE Lantern Festival has been declared a great success for the beginning of the new year. For days, Jiading District was decorated with lanterns and streamers. Happy crowds could be seen throughout the district.
Towns such as Anting, Huangdu and Nanxiang changed into festival costumes.
At 5:30pm on February 9, Lantern Festival, the Yong'an Pagoda in Anting Town became a sea of joy. To the beat of gongs, lion and dragon dance performers skipped along Anting from south to north, entertaining the crowds who followed them.
With a combination of auto culture and traditional culture, many classic performances were staged at Anting.
Audiences were delighted at the lantern scene of "Journey to the West," one of the four great classic novels of Chinese literature, in which Xuanzang, a Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) monk, with his three disciples, takes a car to the West rather than traveling by horse or on foot as the original novel had it. Sheng xiao, the Chinese zodiac animals, also played a big part in the reworked version of the classic.
More than 1,000 neon lights turned the Anting Old Street into a beautiful place.
Residents enjoyed paintings and calligraphy by artists from all over the country, unique rocks and traditional cultural activities such as carving Chinese characters on rice.
The climax for the celebration of the Lantern Festival came when traditional operas, including the magical face changing of Sichuan Opera and programs featuring Anting culture, were staged.
Visitors enjoyed the spectacular lighting, guessed the answers to the riddles written on lanterns, and appreciated folk art.
Special snacks such as ginkgo nut cake made their debut in the market during the festival and became another highlight of the event.
Huangdu Town people also enjoyed themselves greatly on the festival. In addition to the variety of lanterns, fine food, riddles and lion and dragon dances, there were games involving shuttlecocks kicking, balloons stepping and yellow rice wine drinking contests for locals. The yellow rice wine drinking contest has been a very popular tradition in the town. A contestant from northeastern China won first prize and was awarded a LCD television.
