The healing hands, golden heart of Dr Shi
WHEN talking about the retired Dr Shi Zhengfang, people living in Xin'an Community of Anting Town can't conceal their gratitude and admiration for his healing hands and "golden" heart.
Shi has offered free medical services to people living in the neighborhood over the past years. In the words of resident Granny Sun, Shi is not only a doctor with superb skills and experience, but also a dedicated and caring man.
Before his retirement, Shi was a chief physician specializing in the treatment of diabetes and gout at Anting Hospital. Four years ago he was diagnosed with stomach cancer and had four-fifths of his stomach removed.
In 2008 when the Songyuan Residential Area of Xin'an Community in Anting Town was built, there were inadequate medical facilities available in the neighborhood. Anting Hospital was the only choice for the residents. However, it was not convenient for them to travel by bus to the hospital, which is far from the community.
At that time, Shi had just completed his post-surgery chemotherapy. When he heard that the Anting Hospital and the local neighborhood committee planned to set up a free medical service center in the community, he offered to be a community doctor for free. Despite the neighborhood committee's concerns for his health, he insisted.
Residents felt excited about the new medical center. Previously they had to pay for out-patient service of specialist if they needed Shi's help at Anting Hospital, but now they can receive free medical service from him near their homes. Shi even offered a hand in fetching medicine for the patients from Anting Hospital. Because of his excellent medical skills, Shi has an ever-increasing number of patients.
The 70-odd Li Fuqing was diagnosed with prostatitis many years ago and used to urinate six to seven times every night. After Shi's treatment with both traditional Chinese and Western medicine, Li now only needs to get up twice every night.
The symptoms of the 96-year-old Grandpa Sun who has suffered from diabetes for many years have also been relieved with Shi's help.
Shi is very warm-hearted and responds to almost all requests from the residents.
When the resident Yang Xingzhi fell from a bike by accident, Shi arrived as soon as possible to give a hand. According to a resident surnamed Zhang, since Shi's retirement seven years ago, he has received many job offers from private hospitals.
Some hospitals even offered him a daily wage of 500 yuan (US$80). Shi declined all the offers and persisted being a voluntary community doctor. Shi has even set up clinical archives for each of his patients in the community. Each file is filled with notes containing the patient's name and contact number.
"I usually call my patients to get first-hand information about their conditions," Shi says. Shi also held monthly lectures on health care and provided guidance for elderly people on doing physical exercises.
Just like Shi, there are now seven associate chief physicians with many years' medical experience devoted to offering free clinical services to local communities after retirement from the Anting Hospital. Among them are Gong Yuhua, Sun Feilong and Wang Fanhong, who is Shi's wife and a former chief physician from the TCM department of Anting Hospital.
Wang has a tight schedule every day. She gets up before 6am and starts work at another community's medical service center soon after breakfast. Over the past nine years, Wang has provided free medical treatment for more than 13,500 people.
