'The root of Jiading' still flourishes

ZHOUQIAO Old Street could be called "the root of Jiading." It's located in the center of the district and contains ancient pagoda, temple, garden, back lanes and traditional shops that date back respectively to the Song (960-1279), Yuan (1271-1368), Ming (1368-1644) and Qing dynasties (1644-1911).

Walking along the cobblestones is like stepping back in time.

Many of the shops feature fine handiwork, such as traditional embroidered under garments. There are traditional snack shops selling boiled rice dumplings and steamed pork-filled buns.

The melodies of Suzhou pingtan, an ancient performing art of storytelling and ballad singing in the Suzhou dialect, waft through the streets. How delightful to listen to over a cup of green tea in a traditional tea house.

The 800-year-old Fahua Pagoda silently overlooks the hustle and bustle of the street. The view from the top is worth the trip up. There one gets a bird's eye view of Bole Square and Tacheng Road. The bridge over the river is an equally pleasant walk on a fine day.

Old street lanes harbor their own secrets. Here one can find yellow straw weaved shoes and handbags made by craftsmen who have passed their skills down generations. You can see the famous bamboo carvings by artists such as Zhang Weizong.

There are also little lane shops selling traditional clothes and jade ware.
