These cheerful moments make learning a pleasure
STUDENTS in schools across Jiading District enjoy the happy times all year round by learning to sing nursery rhymes in Shanghai dialect, and make rice cakes and soybean milk by themselves.
Happy curriculums have been introduced at some local schools.
Every morning, children at the Jiading Experimental Kindergarten sing and dance to classical music and nursery rhymes in Shanghai dialect after doing gymnastics.
Although they are more used to putonghua, or standard Chinese, they are curious and happy to learn the folk songs despite difficulties.
"We teach children to learn Shanghai dialect by doing outdoor activities so that they can learn it while playing," the kindergarten's teacher Zhang Zhiping said. "It helps the kids become more open."
While the nursery rhymes help teach the children about folk culture, making rice cakes and soybean milk improve their manual dexterity.
The 215 children at Caowang Kindergarten make soybean milk or rice cakes once a week.
Teachers help them prepare flour and water according to required amounts, and the children are eager to get their hands sticky by mixing them into a paste. They make rice cakes in the round and heart shapes, and decorate them with patterns.
"I made a flower on it, and put sugar inside," said Wu Beibei, a little girl. Teachers help them deep fry the cakes. "The kids have strong curiosity, and enjoy learning," the teacher Zhang Yan said.
