Time has come for Xidajie to have the chance of a future
XIDAJIE, or West Street in Jiading District, which is shorter than 1 kilometer long, is one of the best well-preserved old alleys in Shanghai. Many celebrities used to live here.
Foshou is the earliest brand registered in China’s Monosodium Glutamate industry with a history of 100 years. The founder of Foshou, Wu Yunchu, a renowned businessman, was born in his ancestral residence on Xidajie Street.
No.1 Xiangjing Street is a complex of old buildings named Qishun Hall, which is the ancestral residence of the renowned Huang family. Huang Xinbai, a former director of the Ministry of Education, was born into this family of excellent educators and made a great contribution to the development of higher education of China.
Houde Hall is the ancestral residence of the diplomat Koo Vi Kyuin, who was celebrated for his great eloquence at the postwar Paris Peace Conference in 1919.
The residence of more than 30 rooms was built by his father Gu Rong, the president of the Great Qing Government Bank during the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and Early Republic of China (1911-1949) period. The Qing coin patterns on tiles paved in Houde Hall symbolized the status and identity of the host.
Yu Rongling, the first artist of modern dance in China and a student of Isadora Duncan, lived in Lane 172 on the street.
The street, which has witnessed the many changes of times in Jiading, faces renovation and local residents have to move out, starting this month.
Many of the residents are happy to move out because of the poor living environment and simple infrastructure, while many others relish their historical heritage. But they all have the same hope that Xidajie is facing a much better future.
