'Tis the season to be jolly, well-fed and stylish
SPRING Festival is just around the corner, and with it comes the season for buying gifts, preparing traditional foods and dressing up in new clothes.
This year's run-up to the Lunar New Year is tinged with modern concepts of technology, healthier lifestyles and environmental awareness. Online shopping is all the rage, especially among middle-aged people trying to save money and young people addicted to the digital world.
Wang Feifei, a resident from Anting Town, spent 3,180 yuan (US$489) on a cell phone as a gift for her husband. She bought it from 360buy.com.
"The website offers cheaper price than in shops,'' Wang said. "Besides, I received a discount voucher for 600 yuan, so I ordered a down jacket that cost 400 yuan for my mother. It's all so convenient."
Newegg.com.cn, a similar online shopping site for computers, electronic products and articles of daily use, set up a new channel for Spring Festival shopping this month and added food products for the first time to its list of offerings.
Tastes of a non-digital nature are changing, too, for a holiday season steeped in banquets.
"I've been thinking about changes to the foods we eat,'' said a lady surnamed Yang, who lives at Malu Town.
In past years, her holiday shopping lists were dominated by traditional foods such as chicken, duck, fish and pork. She figures she used to spend up to 500 yuan on those foods. This year, however, she plans to spend less than 200 yuan.
"There will be so many dinners during Spring Festival, which makes health an issue of more concern," Yang said. "Instead of buying pickled meats, a must-have food for the festival, we are shifting to organic vegetables."
Clothing and bedding products are the hot sellers this holiday season at the Shanghai Light Textile Market. It is reported that the daily customer flow there is about 50,000 people, since many people like to don new clothes for New Year.
Spring Festival isn't just about food and gifts and looking stylish.
To celebrate the Lunar New Year, a variety of performances, calligraphy and art exhibitions and sports meets will be held in Jiading.
Through February 17, the Shanghai Huju Opera Troupe and the Shanghai Magic Circus will perform for residents in communities in Huating and Xuhang towns.
And to keep fit in between all that eating, classes in fitness, Latin dancing, yoga and taekwondo will be held in Jiading Town Cultural Center.
