Tougher rules lead to fewer violations

THE number of traffic violations, including casualties in Jiading District, dropped by half year-on-year since the "strictest traffic regulations" were introduced on January 1.

Long-haul bus drivers allowing passengers to get on or off on highways will now face a 12 point deduction, up from six, according to the new regulations. It means a driver violating the rule risks losing his job.

Nine such cases were reported in January, down 75 percent from December, thanks to the stricter rule.

Meanwhile, high definition video cameras have been added to some exit ramps along the Shanghai-Jiading Highway to better enforce traffic rules.

Fewer incidents in which drivers ran the red or yellow lights were reported in January.

Taxi driver Chen Ming placed a piece of paper with the new regulations and penalties in his car.

"All these are cut from newspapers and remind me to stop my bad driving habits," Chen said.

At the beginning of the month when the regulations were first introduced, some accidents occurred at the crossroads as motorists were unaccustomed to slowing down for yellow lights.

Jiading police reminded drivers to concentrate on driving, keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front and reduce speed at intersections.

Last year, 106 road accidents were reported in Jiading, resulting in 81 deaths and 68 injuries with a total economic loss of 832,900 yuan (US$133,692).
