Tourist agencies fight back after sales drop
TRAVEL agencies in Jiading are making every effort to improve their service and product quality to attract tourists after seeing a sharp shrinkage in business in the first month of this year.
The agencies recorded an 80 percent drop in customer numbers and a 44 percent drop in sales income in January, following the national restrictions on the use of public funds.
“If we didn’t take action, we will fall deep and never get back,” said Jiang Xinhua, Jialing International Travel Agency’s general manager.
Last year, the company’s sales income was over 50 million yuan (US$8.14 million). Although still ranking the top of all Jiading travel agencies, it was the first time for the agency to see a decrease in its income during the past 20 years.
A key move for the agency is to offer service around the Shanghai Disneyland park, which is being constructed in Pudong New Area and due to open in 2015. It is to sign contracts with the hotel near the park, and become a ticket agent for the Disneyland. It also plans to establish a rural resort based on agricultural resources around the Disneyland.
Customized service
For domestic tours, it plans to launch some special in-depth tours and customized tours to different areas of China. “Those new tourism products will be created by our staff based on their own travel experiences,” Jiang said.
The Shanghai International Automobile City Tourism Development Company suffered a 30 percent drop in business. “The current situation is both a challenge and an opportunity to us,” said Liu Ruiming, its deputy general manger. “This year we will focus on high-quality individual tour products.”
The company is to add more service points in Jiading District and establish an e-commerce platform.
It also plans to better use its tourist resources in the Shanghai Automobile City, such as organizing tours to Shanghai Volkswagen factory, the Formula One Grand Prix events and the Automobile Expo Park. “We can attract over 10,000 tourists every year with these resources,” said Liu.
