Towns gear up for activity displays

VISITORS to Expo Shanghai can experience local cultural activities in Malu, Anting and Jiading towns and Jiading Industrial Zone.

The activity programs in these four towns have all been listed among the city's top 30 "Urban Culture Experience Days."

In Malu, visitors can see and learn the folk crafts of bamboo carving and bamboo weaving. Paper-cut fans will have the opportunity to study from the master Wang Jianzhong and bring their own works home.

Gourd carving master Xu Xiuxing will also teach how to carve on the gourd.

In Nanyuan Calligraphy and Painting Club at Jiading Industrial Zone, visitors can communicate directly with local enthusiasts of calligraphy and painting and can also try to paint on fans.

In mid-July, more than 30 foreign visitors from 12 countries and regions such as Gabon and Malta will visit the Club.

Jiading's folk artists also provide local flavor to visitors.

Huang Zhenliang is known as a "king of story-telling," from whom one can learn Shanghai dialect and get insight into local people's daily life.

A team formed by residents from Malu Town will present the award-winning kung fu and "grape exercises."

During Expo, the famous Malu grapes get ripe and visitors should not miss grape-picking at Malu Grape Park.

Also, visitors can taste a lot of folk snacks at Anting Old Street. Dances and exhibitions in the theme of "blueprint cloth" will also give them a full picture of local life.
