Tradition doing what digital can’t ...
Books have played an important role in society’s development since ancient times, and the book itself has been developing in terms of materials and binding styles for thousands of years.
These days, digital reading is gradually replacing traditional books. However, the book is still an essential part of human culture.
At the Artron Art Center in Jiading District, you can see examples of the art of book design and printing.
‘Modernist Cuisine’
“Modernist Cuisine” is an excellent presentation of delicious food designed to make your mouth water. Author Nathan Myhrvold got a PhD in theoretical physics in Princeton at 23 and went to Cambridge to do research with Steven Hawking. He went on to establish a company named Dynamical System Research in California which was bought over by Bill Gates in 1986.
Myhrvold left Microsoft in 1999 to establish Intellectual Ventures.
One day, he shared a new kind of cooking technology on a cooking forum, and found pictures and information to explain his idea. This material later became an important part of the early edition of “Modernist Cuisine.”
The book challenges traditional cooking methods and uses technology to make cooking easier. It uses pictures to illustrate the scientific principle of cooking and teaches people to deal with food from a different perspective.
The book includes a 230-page guidebook with waterproof and removable pages.
‘STAND HERE’
This book is a collection of prints by nature photographer Rodney Lough Jr. Its 87 images capture the magnificence and beauty of the outdoors nature.
Lough is not professionally trained. He used to work in statistics industry but turned to photography full time because of his love of the art. Since 1995, he has taken many pictures in the national parks and historic sites across America. Today, he owns a photographic art museum and several private galleries.
He said his friends were full of doubt when he left his job but he says he keeps moving forward, keen to explore nature and make images which will be of lasting value.
‘Picture Album of the Opera Master Mei Lanfang’
The thread-bound “Picture Album of the Opera Master Mei Lanfang” won an award in Germany in 2003 which declared it was that year’s “Most Beautiful Book.”
It’s printed in four colors, and the reading order is the same as in ancient times — from right to left.
The album displays many sketches of characters from the Peking Opera collected by the opera master Mei Lanfang in the 1920s and 1930s. The editor also invited two senior opera artists — Liu Zengfu and Zhu Jiajin — to write articles on the background and artistic value of the sketches.
‘Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum’
The mausoleum of Qinshihuang, the first emperor in Chinese history, is said to be one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. This book collects the pictures and descriptions of almost all the exhibits in the Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum.
In 2013, when South Korea’s President Park Geun-hye visited the museum, she was presented with a copy of the book.
The book takes yellow, red and black as its main colors and uses earthy yellow as the cover. The embossed pattern on the cover shows the positions of the underground mausoleum and the construction on the ground.
‘A painting album of flowers, birds and fish’
This volume collects the work of Chen Jialing, an expert in the depiction of flowers, birds and fish, and was designed by Yuan Yinchang. The cover is in white cotton.
‘China Woodcut New Year Painting Masterpieces’
