Transport plans will bring trams to Jiading

TRAMS will be coming to Jiading soon as Shanghai’s network expands into the district with the area involved in plans, along with Fengxian, Shanghai International Travel & Vacation Zone, Hongqiao Business Zone and Linggang New Town, to set up a public tram system.

The moves come after Songjiang won approval to become the first district in Shanghai to operate a public tram system, with six lines already on the drawing board.

Shanghai has one tram route at present running from Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park to Heqing Town. But residents complain it is too slow and commuters on the tram are mostly tourists taking it for sightseeing.

The new trams will improve on that service, having their own independent roadways and larger cabins to transport more passengers. The speed of the tram in Songjiang is expected to reach 22 kilometers an hour.

“The average speed of buses is between 15 to 18 kilometers an hour. Trams can hardly attract passengers if they are slower than buses, so have an independent right of way is a trend for tramcars in the future,” said Shen Guohong, chairman of Shanghai Metro Transport and Underground Design Institute.

Compared to other modes of transport, trams are low emission, consume less energy and the costs are lower. The cost of setting up tram system is less than a quarter of the Metro and the construction period around a third, Shen said.

Shanghai is to develop some 800 kilometers of tramlines in the future to meet commuting demand in suburban and large residential areas.

The plans for a system in Jiading are already being formulated.
