Tycoon's house reminds of the legend who once lived there
THE Xidajie Street in the west of Jiading Town is the only block that maintains a view of ancient Jiading despite the passing of time with many former residences of celebrities.
One of them is Tao's Residence at 344 Xidajie Street.
Built in the 1930s, this double-storey building features East-meets-West architecture. It has colored tilts, guard rails and a corridor; and the carvings inside the staircase linking the wing rooms and the main building are intricate and well preserved.
The original owner Tao Jiyuan (1905-1968) was born in Jiading.
He made his first fortunes by investing in the stock market for which he also won the title "King of Stocks" in Shanghai.
In 1935 Tao used the bucket of gold he earned from stock trading on establishing a textile factory called Jiafeng Cotton Mill.
Originally he planned to set up the factory with an entire industry chain, including spinning, weaving and dying. But later he gave up the plan because he was afraid that the pollution from the dying would harm the local environment.
Tao was thus lauded as a responsible businessman at that time.
