Villagers get back on the air after 10-year gap

AFTER a gap of 10 years, local radio has been reintroduced for rural residents in Lianjun Village of Huating Town.

The first day of broadcasts on May 5 featured a question and answer session with village committee director Gu Libin.

“Many roads in the village are almost too narrow for cars, sometimes villagers have to walk into fields to let cars drive past, so it would be better to expand the roads,” villager Xiang Yuanliang suggested. Gu told him that roads would be widened in 12 villages this year.

Zhang Haihong suggested teams should be organized to get rid of the rubbish from the village as warmer weather approached. Gu answered: “Cleaning the village periodically has been included in the routine management and rubbish bins will also be cleaned every day.”

The radio station broadcasts from 6am to 8pm every day.

Pleasing dialect

Apart from programs from the Central People’s Radio Station, Shanghai 990 Morning News and Jiading Radio Station, there will also be home-produced programs aired between 10am and 11am every Monday in the local dialect.

Weather information will also be broadcast.

“I cannot use a computer and watching TV is too much for my eyes, so listening to broadcasts while doing domestic chores is good for me,” said 65-year-old Wang Yingshi. “Besides, the local dialect is much easier to understand and especially pleasing.”

“Huating is a remote town with seniors a majority of population,” Zhu Xu, a member of Huting township committee, said.

“The senior people can receive information, seek entertainment, expand their knowledge and exchange ideas from the radio. It’s much more effective than other media.”

“We collected more than 100 suggestions from villagers, and we will answer these questions by broadcasting one by one,” Gu said.

So far, the radio service has been installed in more than 500 households in Lianjun free of charge. Huating plans to expand the service to other villages in the town.
