Vision for a model city of the future unfolds
A new year brings new visions for the future in Jiading District.
The government has set three overarching goals for its 2011-15 development plan: building a good image for Jiading New City; taking a leading role in industrial restructuring and making social development advanced among the suburbs of Shanghai.
Jiading New City, from its inception, was developed on concepts promoting the best in urban planning, architecture and construction, aiming to create a model city of the future.
Among the renowned architects hired to assist in the development is Japan's Tadao Ando. Jacques Ferrier has also lent his expertise to the district.
Environmentally friendly technology and materials are being used in 65 percent of the buildings in the new city. Energy saving is a watchword. Jiading New City also plans to become the first entirely wireless city in China, serving as a demonstration model.
Industrial restructuring is moving apace. The emphasis is on clean-energy, advanced industries that will add value to the city's economic base.
One major growing sector is the automobile industry. The output value of auto parts almost quintupled in the last five years, which has made the foundation of the auto industry more solid. By the end of 2015, the auto industry is expected to account for 40 percent of the district's industrial output value, the strongest pillar for the increase of Jiading's industry.
Development of advanced technology is focused on sectors such as green cars, the Internet of Things, advanced industrial materials, bio-medicine and digital information systems.
In the next five years, Jiading will nurture the development of 800 companies in what is called the culture and information industry, with aggregate revenue there expected to reach 80 billion yuan.
In public services, the district plans to improve its medical network, provide more help to the elderly and expand public transport.
