Volunteers become stars online in musical tribute
“Lao Zhang,” a musical created by Jiading residents as an ode to volunteers, became a hit during the online Spring Festival gala broadcast on China Community Network, Xinhua Net and Hubei Star TV. The video attracted more than 600,000 clicks during the holidays.
Pan Dahua, head of the volunteer performers, said the group submitted five programs, including “Lao Zhang” in January for official review.
On February 1, Pan heard that it had reached the final review stages.
“I was unable to go to bed till very late that night,” Pan said. He wasn’t fully relieved until the next day when he heard that everything had gone smoothly.
About 12,000 communities nationwide submitted a total of 15,000 programs for the online Spring Festival gala. Before the show, the national online Spring Festival gala producer sent a specialist to visit the performers, and gave high praise for the program.
Being able to get the show online was good news but there were some initial problems. Physically challenged performer Zhang Lihua is performing in the show, along with her 6-year-old grandson.
However, the family wouldn’t let her bring the young child to Wuhan in central China’s Hubei Province to join the gala show for safety concerns.
The family did not give in until Zhang convinced them that the child would be well cared for.
The stage in Wuhan, equipped with a lift, was more complicated than the performers were used to. “Performers need to move from the ground to steps from time to time, and the program did not pass the director’s inspection after four trials over two days,” Pan said.
Eventually, the performers were successful. They said they learned a lot from communicating with people from different regions.
From Pan’s perspective, the show on the Internet Spring Festival gala can help promote public awareness and encourage more people to participate in volunteer programs.
