Volunteers bring joy and happiness on Seniors Day

THE Double Ninth Festival, or Seniors Day, fell during the week-long National Day holiday this year. Volunteers paid their respects for seniors through colorful activities in nursing homes or welfare houses.
Volunteers in Jiangqiao Town visited Fengbang Nursing Home before the holiday to take pictures of couples celebrating their golden wedding anniversaries. Some had never had their photographs taken before.
An area for the photography was set in a small garden inside the nursing home. The volunteers showed great patience and helped the seniors to trim their hair and adjust their sitting postures. With their help, all the seniors had bright smiles in their pictures.
It was the first photograph of Jiao Yunlian, 84, and Sun Shude, 88. The couple wore traditional red Chinese suits and were very pleased with the result.
Volunteers from Longhu and Baiyin communities celebrated birthdays for 20 seniors born in September in Malu Welfare House. Tang Aizhen, 90, said her children visited once a week, but she was surprised to see so many people celebrating her birthday together. “I’m so happy and hope volunteers can come and chat with us more often,” Tang said.
Volunteers arranged dancing, singing and exercises for the seniors. Volunteers prepared cakes for Tang Aizhen and sent some to seniors who were confined to bed.
Teachers and students from Huangdu High School went to Huangdu Senior’s Home before National Day holiday.
They gave a set of tools for Qu Liming as gift as he has been repairing radios and equipment of gas, water and electricity free of charge for many years.
The volunteers got to know Qu Liming’s dream of having a complete set of tools and thus sent the gift to help him fulfil his dream. “With the tools, Qu can provide a better service for the seniors,” Tian Qinghe, a teacher of Huangdu High School, said.
