Volunteers on patrol dedicated to improving living conditions
JIADING has more than 200,000 volunteers registered online. They are enthusiastic about public welfare and go about their work with quiet dedication. Their aspiration is to make Jiading an even more desirable place in which to live.
Qian Jia is one such volunteer who patrols the rivers in his neighborhood. The young man from Yongle Village in Nanxiang Town walks thousands of steps a day and has made his own map of the district’s waterways.
Qian reported water conditions daily to the official in charge of cleaning up the local rivers. “I grew up here,” said Qian. “They are the mother rivers of my homeland. If they are tainted by garbage I’ll do my best to clean them up. That’s it!”
At the Jiahao community in Jiangqiao Town, dog owners keep an eye on their neighborhood as they walk their pets. “The community has its environment much more improved through their efforts,” said Feng Jingli, Party secretary of the community.
Dog owners are on patrol throughout the day and often at night depending on the needs of their animals. One of the owners, Pan Lihua, walks her dog in the morning or at night. Pan and her dog check every corner of the community and report any illegalities they find to the neighborhood committee.
In Feng’s opinion, the dog patrollers have encouraged more local residents to take part in community affairs.
Another volunteer is Wang Yuying from the Juyuan New Area who has been making cotton shoes for the elderly people in her community for more than a decade. She is 81 years old and disabled.
Thanks to an introduction by the local authority, a garment factory helps Wang with her work. The factory provides materials and even designed a logo for Wang’s shoes.
