Volunteers show off cultural side of Juyuan
A group of volunteers help organize community cultural activities for the public every week in Juyuan New Area of Jiading District. Pupils, middle school students, young people and retired citizens have participated. They are addressed by people respectfully as "cultural volunteers."
When entering the Social Welfare Institute of Jiading District, visitors saw the traditional paper-cutting artwork hanging in the corridor.
According to Ma Huiyi, director of the cultural center, the artwork was made by cultural volunteers and the pieces have added an artistic ambience to the institute. The volunteers also made boards to introduce health care information for seniors. To help the elderly find different places at the institute, volunteers placed many small "footprints" on the ground to give directions. All these seemingly simple ideas help make the elderly feel comfortable.
"During festivals and holidays, the volunteers come and perform for the elderly. Their story telling, magic entertainment and music help the elderly enjoy life," said Xu Xiaolu, the office chief of the institute.
Xu Rude and Xu Yueqin, both aged 90, often praise the children volunteers who tell them stories. Xu Rude said: "These children make us so happy because they tell many stories vividly with cute performances."
Ren Zeming, 8, is one of the story-telling volunteers. To complete one poetry recital with nine other volunteers, he had to give up his leisure time after class and learn a 2,000-word-script by heart.
"We want him to gain pleasure from helping others," Ren's mother said when asked why she sent him to the institute to be a volunteer.
Zhu Yanjun, 17, known as a "little prince" in Shaoxing Opera performances, is a volunteer at the library in Juyuan New Area. On weekends, Zhu can be seen arranging books and assisting readers.
"Every time I put the books on the shelves in order, I have a strong sense of accomplishment because this work helps readers find books easily. So in a way, this work helps me concentrate better," said Zhu.
"I am a cultural volunteer and my regular work is to bring cultural programs to every neighborhood in Juyuan New Area," said Xi Songlin as he put up a poster in one building.
Despite the increasing demands for cultural activities, the programs failed to attract large crowds due to a lack of publicity. To solve this problem, a volunteer team of 30 families has formed to post posters about upcoming performances in buildings in Juyuan New Area.
