Volvo zooms into auto city with C30 tests

VOLVO Car Corporation and Shanghai International Automobile City Group signed a memorandum on November 8 to cooperate on the development and operation of new energy vehicles in the future.

This indicates that Volvo becomes the world's first luxury auto brand to realize the mass production of electric vehicles.

Volvo Car will provide its C30 electric sedan to Shanghai International Automobile City in Jiading District. The electric vehicles will be used for test driving in demonstration areas and also participate in electric vehicle assessment projects.

Meanwhile, Shanghai International Automobile City will collect data about the performance of the C30 from users, which will be used to improve the system and upgrade the mass production.

Volvo C30 electric vehicle is the latest fruit of Volvo's "DRIVe Green Driving Strategy," debuted in China at 2011 Shanghai Auto Show.

The sedan looks similar to the Volvo C30 currently sold in the market. It is also well-equipped and as safe and comfortable as the common one, and yet it is more environmentally friendly and convenient.

Lying at its heart is a 24 kWh battery that can be recharged through a regular 220V (16A, 10A or 6A) household power socket. A full charge takes about eight to 10 hours. The car's distance range is 150 kilometers per full charge. The top speed is 130 kilometers per hour and acceleration from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour takes 10.5 seconds.

In April, Shanghai became the first international electric vehicle pilot city and Jiading District was chosen as an electric vehicles international demonstration zone.

As the R&D center for the new energy vehicles in Shanghai, the demonstration area pledges that the number of electric cars in use will reach 10,000 through its promotion.

Besides, Volvo has plans for a new research and development center in the district. Two new Volvo models targeted at the Chinese market are under development at present. According to Shen Hui, senior vice-president of Volvo and chairman of Volvo Cars China Operations, one model is a B-class car and the other is a mini car.

The R&D center will cover 20.4 hectares. Its first phase will feature the headquarters' science mansion, a design center, a test workshop, a lab for motor testing and a lab for wind tunnel testing.
