Waigang Town embraces modern agriculture

THERE will be no more greenhouses, nor farms for domesticated animals or fish ponds in Waigang Town. Two years later, the town will be turned into a modern agricultural production base for rice and wheat.

By then, only dozens of people are needed to take care of thousands of acres of farmland.

Great attention to detail has been involved in preparatory work. Every inch of the land was surveyed. The report for land remediation has already been submitted. The project involves 558 hectares of land and will cost 200 million yuan (US$31.6 million). The first phase will be completed by the end of June when the rice will be planted. The second phase will begin in October and finish in June 2013.

The modern farmland has taken shape in Gelong Village, which has 73.33 hectares of fertile land without any obstructions like houses. The whole farmland is cut into many rectangle units with the same size. Each unit is 350 meters long and 45 meters wide, linked by drainage pipelines and concrete roads.

Xu Yongqing has been farming for more than 10 years. After the adjustment of land division, he now grows grains on 66.6 hectares. This year he expects better harvest and the income will increase by over 10,000 yuan, much more than he earned before.

The farmland reform aims to maximize the use of land and water. An additional 3 percent of land will be freed up for agricultural use. The highly concentrated farming land will facilitate fully automated production.

After completion, irrigation and water conservancy will rise 15 percent. Fertilizer will also be used more effectively. A high level of soil fertility will boost production. Meanwhile, a high level of mechanization will save labor, and the integration of scattered farmland will improve the ecological environment.
