Wang’s the best neighbor anyone could wish for ...

WANG Yuying in Loutang Old Street of Jiading Industrial Zone is nicknamed “key granny” as she keeps the keys of 15 neighbors because they know she can be trusted with them.
At the 78-year-old’s home there are no fewer than 31 keys from 15 of her neighbors.
At first, she just helped neighbors to keep an eye of their children after school. Sometimes if their parents were late in picking them up, she would even cook a meal for them. The neighbors were so grateful for her services that they started to leave their keys with her.
At the beginning of the year the water meters in several houses broke because of the extremely cold weather.
Wang checked all the houses where the occupiers had returned to their hometowns for the Chinese New Year holiday. She contacted the neighborhood committee, property management and volunteers to clear up the mess the water had caused.
“They gave me the keys, so I have to make sure their houses are kept in a good condition,” Wang said.
After the clear-up, there was no one to repair the meters as the hotline was too busy.
Wang contacted head of Loutang Water Factory, who helped her to repair the meters after she had calculated the number that had been damaged.
Wang helps neighbors by paying their rent when they are unable to get to the office.
She also helps them to collect clothes, letters, deal with couriers and pay their utility bills. In addition, she often helps neighbors solve family disputes.
Wang was honored as one of Shanghai’s outstanding voluntary workers this month.
