Wang’s work set to bloom in spring
GARDENERS at a wisteria base beside the Jiahang Expressway in Jiading are busy planting seedlings. There are more than 3,000 plants of 30 species. The flowers will bloom in spring.
Wang Lin set up the base because of his love for the plant.
The 59-year-old man has been a fan since the opening of Jiading Wisteria Park when he became fascinated with the color and fragrance of the flower. His elder brother is a gardener there.
In 2009, Japanese gardener Michio Fujimoto came to work at the park, and Wang, who had studied agriculture in Japan, was invited to be his interpreter. The pair quickly became good friends.
In 2011, Wang wanted to plant wisteria in his daughter’s garden when she moved into a new house. When Fujimoto heard this he brought him three wisteria seedlings.
Wang has visited Fujimoto at his wisteria plantation several times and later had the idea of planting wisteria himself.
Wisteria needs trimming several times a year, and it is a skill. Wang would invite Fujimoto to visit at trimming time, or he would fly to Japan to learn the best way to do it.
This year, Wang plans to plant 100 species of around 5,000 wisteria plants.
Fujimoto visited Jiading for the first time in 1987 and a decade later he planted the first wisteria tree in the district. Since then, it has become a symbol of Jiading. At Jiading Wisteria Park there are more than 100 wisteria trees of 28 varieties. The Japanese-style park opened in 2000 to celebrate Jiading’s friendly cooperation with Wake Town in Japan’s Okayama Prefecture.
