Ways to celebrate the Year of the Horse
Jiading residents celebrated the Year of the Horse in many different ways, especially those families with members surnamed Ma, meaning “horse” in Chinese, or who were born in a previous Year of the Horse.
Yao Jialei, 36, a native of Nanxiang Town, was born in the Year of the Horse, as were his son and his mother. Yao bought a complete set of red clothes for his son, and had a photo taken to preserve the memory.
On the morning of the first day of Chinese Lunar New Year, Yao and six family members went to a photographic studio, where the three members born in the Years of the Horse were all dressed in red. They found many others having family photos taken at the studio to commemorate their Years of the Horse.
On the eve of Chinese New Year, Ma Fei, a migrant worker in Xuhang Town, made a call to his parents in neighboring Anhui Province. Ma Fei, his son and wife gathered around a dinner table in a rented house, discussing the a trip to Shanghai’s downtown the next day.
Ma planned to take his family on a tour of the city as they had never visited the downtown area before. Every day they worked hard to make a living and to increase their income they rented two hectares of farmland to plant rice in Xuhang Village. Last semester, their son came top of his class and, as a reward, Ma promised to take him on a trip downtown.
Before the Chinese New Year holiday, Wang Yuying from Taichen Community in Juyuan New Area was occupied with handing out cotton shoes for the elderly and families with financial difficulties in the area.
When Wang retired in 2007, she read a news item about elderly people needing thick cotton shoes, so she decided to make some by herself. Her work won support from other women in the community and every year since then they make new shoes for the senior citizens.
