Wearable devices are the ones to watch
The China Wearable Device Promotional Association was established in Jiading on March 18, co-founded by China E-commerce Chamber and Shanghai Institute of Micro-technology and Information.
Several years ago, Apple Inc realized the importance of mobile Internet and cellphone apps and now the company has launched its Apple Watch, with many people asking if this is the beginning of a new era for electronic devices.
The association’s opening ceremony might answer the question in some aspect — the more than 100 seats were all occupied, and even the aisles were full of entrepreneurs. People discussed the recent Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, where intelligent watches and glasses were the new highlights, replacing cellphones as the major attraction.
So far, a number of Chinese companies have entered the field. The latest technology from Shenzhen Orbbec can install “eyes” on cars and cellphones through a 3D sensing system, and the auto-riding bicycle of Baidu also impressed the audience.
“During the construction of intelligent city, the intelligent Internet of things, cloud computing and big data will stimulate the demand of families in intelligent devices,” said Wang Xi, president of Shanghai Micro-System Institute of China Academy of Science.
Liu De, vice president of Xiaomi, gave a speech on the current status and future of wearable devices in China. Last year, Xiaomi’s operation revenue reached 74.3 billion yuan (US$12 billion), and this year it’s expected to reach 100 billion yuan.
Liu said Xiaomi had invested in wearable devices. More than 10 million of its intelligent bracelets were sold last year.
