When all else fails, the man to call is tinsmith Tang
Tinsmiths used to play an important role in the urban life. Older generations remember those tinsmiths who could make various home appliances with their skilled hands, such as dustpans, oil cans, funnels, kettles, cashboxes, or even the pumps used in grain and oil shops.
Tang Junchang, a resident of Loutang Town, established himself as one of the best tinsmiths in town over a 50-year career.
Tang’s 30-square-meter workshop is packed with his works, from kitchen utensils to items used in factories. Tang, 63, can make anything you require and over the past 50 years he has held fast to his motto: “Do the best since you’ve decided to do it.”
Tang started to learn his craft at the age of 12 and since that time he has always been ready to help others, such as replacing the bottoms of aluminum pot and bucket made of galvanized iron.
After primary school, Tang entered a local metal workshop at the age of 14. Later he started to make waterspouts and various tools for use in daily life and farm work.
In 1970, when his company was merged with the Jiading Valve Factory, he was already a famous tinsmith in Loutang.
In 1975, when many others failed to repair a broken stainless steel inner tank at Baosteel company, Tang was asked to give a hand. It took him one day to complete a job to the owner’s satisfaction.
In 1980, Tang was invited to Shanghai Shengchang Photoelectric Machinery Company to build a stainless steel inner tank, which required fairy high technique and no one else could do it. Tang quickly completed the work according to the blueprint, and was asked to work in this company for the later 20 years.
In 1989, Shanghai Volkswagen Automobile Factory asked Tang to make a sample of car wheel protection shield after many other tinsmiths had failed. Tang spent one week making the first qualified sample, earning praise as a “genius” by the staff of the factory.
Over the past 50 years, Tang has made numerous products with his skillful hands, such as long mouth teapots, cashboxes for stores, cigarette boxes, chopstick holders, hot pots and many others.
Using his scissors and hammer, he has become a legendary figure in the tinsmith world.
