When working at college is more than a pleasure
I often call myself a "college worker." In my four years of college life, besides study, I spent most of my time "producing vehicles." Actually, "producing vehicles" for me is participating in the student project of the Automobile College, from which we have learned a lot of things not available in a classroom, as well as observing various aspects of society.
My "vehicle mates" and I may look different from other students - our clothes are always colorful with various stains, and there are usually tools, rather than books in our schoolbags. Other classmates play basketball and watch movies as entertainment, but we stay with our project.
Our project group is mostly working on energy-saving racing cars. We need to invent and produce a new car every year to take part in the contests in Japan and China. It's not just intellectual work. We have to test the car in an extreme environment and never complain.
When the car doesn't work well, we have less time to relax. From 6am to midnight, there's always someone working on the car. From this project, we have built up very close friendships. I've a strong feeling that we can get through anything as long as we're together. In the 2008 contest, our car achieved an excellent result - consuming 1 liter of oil for 966 kilometers of racing and became the champion. At that night, we hugged each other with tears in our eyes.
As an automobile major student, I am very excited about joining such a project. For us, about 11 months mean a season, and I've spent almost all my spare time on this project. From the conclusion of the last season, the confirmation of the new design, building up a new 3-D model, producing the real car and testing, and attending the final competition. All these are what we do for the season.
In this project, what we have learned is not just professional knowledge, because the project involves many other issues like financial sponsors, manufacturing consignments and filling in applications to go abroad. We have opportunities to contact with some famous scholars and managers of enterprises. At the same time, we also need to communicate with workers in the factories. They are all working on vehicles, and I'm happy I'm actually one of them.
