Where to see fall colors, eat and shop
IT is a pleasure to travel, to eat or go shopping in October. When summer turns to autumn, we need to slow down and enjoy life. Here are some suggestions.
Maple, alangium, and smoke tree that grow in the Fragrant Hills and Badaling just outside Beijing begin to turn red in September. But not until after the first frost of the lunar calendar - usually falling around October 23 or 24 - does the best viewing time for autumn foliage begin. Their red and golden panorama of trees and shrubs usually lasts into the middle of November.
Qixia Mountain in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, is also a good place to view spectacular autumn foliage. About 30 minutes' drive northeast of Nanjing is a mountainous area where the colors are most pronounced. Shanghai residents wishing to go there now have the advantage of a new high-speed rail link to Nanjing.
Daocheng in Sichuan Province is also a place worth visiting this time of the year. It sits among beautiful mountains, pastureland and forests. The Yading Nature Reserve is at its best in autumn. As you rise in elevation, you will find streams and waterfalls surrounded by golden and red autumn foliage.
Visiting World Expo in Shanghai can be a gourmet experience.
The Sixth Sense Restaurant on the top of the France Pavilion offers a splendid menu, including entrees of cod or sea bass fillets and chocolate mocha desserts.
The Turkey Pavilion restaurant provides a traditional menu of beef and lamb barbecue. Bread and rice served alongside allow diners to sop up the delectable sauces. All the ingredients are flown by air from Turkey and cooked by Turkish chefs.
Japanese Restaurant Yamazato on the right side of the Japan Pavilion exit serves authentic Japanese cuisine, including sashimi, eel rice and roast beef.
Meals don't come cheap at these restaurants. Dinner for one usually starts at more than 100 yuan (US$14.9) and some meals can run over 300 yuan. For those on a budget, try the area just outside Expo Park, where you can enjoy Shanghai-style dim sum. In Nanxiang Town, a special festival featuring Nanxiang-style steamed buns begins on September 29.
The Shanghai 2010 Shopping Festival kicked off on September 10 and will run through to October 7. Over 2,000 companies and outlets are participating. This year, the festival will also feature online activities, in cooperation with Newegg and E3131 websites. Check out the discount coupons and lottery draw.
The third annual Cao'an Shopping Festival begins in October and runs through to next February. There will be discounts galore on items such as bedding, carpets and curtains. It's a great place for people who want to redecorate their homes on a budget.
