White Dews a sign of cooler weather
WHITE Dews, one of the 24 Chinese solar terms, usually occurs during September 7 to 9. The term indicates that in the days ahead there will be more dew in the morning and that the weather will be cooler. As the water vapor in the air condenses to dew on trees, flowers and grass, the birds start to prepare for winter.
It is also a time of year where people need to watch their health. As the temperature cools, the air becomes drier, which is called qiuzao (autumn dry) in traditional Chinese medicine. In autumn, people may feel thirsty and their skin may crack. Many people will adjust their diet to stay healthy. For example, some people may choose some lite food such as lotus seeds and lily soup or yam congee to reduce the influence of qiuzao.
Other foods popular at this time of the year are: scallion stalk, ginger, caraway and cardamom to prevent and treat colds; beet and cherry juice to prevent hives; turnip and fresh olive juice to prevent diphtheria; litchi to prevent bad breath caused by stomatitis and gastritis; and carrot congee to prevent dizziness.
