Wildlife flourishing as new species arrive
WANG Jianxing, 53, came to Liudao Forest Area in Jiading District to be a wild animal inspector two years ago.
"At that time I ran around with an animal illustrated handbook and a telescope, wrote down the birds' characteristics, behaviors, flying distances and voice specialties," Wang said.
Now Wang no longer takes the illustrated handbook as he knows it by heart. However, his notebooks contain more and more details of the district's wildlife.
Wildlife in Jiading, especially birds, has seen an increase in recent years.
According to the latest reports, there are a total of 112 species of wildlife in the district. Among them, six are amphibians, 11 reptiles, 87 birds and eight animals. This year has seen 23 more species of birds than were spotted the previous year.
At 7am every day in the noise of brown back shrikes, Wang begins his day of bird inspection. Wang can distinguish different species of birds easily.
Wang takes the same route every day and watches from a distance, always excited when he comes across something new.
Liudao Forest Area is a settlement for most of the birds in Jiading and it has become one of the largest habitats for woodland birds in Shanghai as well.
Workers have planted more trees with berries, lawns and shrubs on the land to provide more food and resting places for birds.
They also planted lotuses in rivers to improve water quality and make the area more comfortable for birds to settle down and find food.
